Protect Free Speech: Our Voice Must Not Be Silenced

Petición dirigida a: National Legislature and Government

Governments and platforms are restricting lawful speech at an alarming rate. We demand strong, enforceable protections for free expression for every citizen.

Free speech is the cornerstone of every free society. Without it, democracy cannot function. Citizens cannot hold power accountable. Truth cannot emerge from open debate.

Yet today, free expression faces unprecedented threats. Governments are expanding vague "harmful content" laws that criminalize legitimate opinion. Online platforms silence users without due process or transparent appeal. Journalists, academics, and ordinary citizens self-censor out of fear of legal or professional consequences.

This is not acceptable.

Free speech does not mean speech without consequences. It means that no government, no corporation, and no institution may use law or coercion to silence a person simply because their words are unpopular, uncomfortable, or politically inconvenient.

The facts are clear:

• Overly broad content moderation rules disproportionately target minority viewpoints and dissenting voices.
• "Hate speech" definitions are expanding beyond incitement to violence and now cover protected political and moral opinion.
• Whistleblowers, activists, and journalists face criminal charges for exposing information the public has a right to know.
• Digital platforms acting as de facto public squares apply opaque, inconsistent, and politically skewed moderation standards.

We believe in the following core principles:

1. Every person has the right to express opinions on political, social, moral, and religious matters without fear of state punishment.
2. Any restriction on speech must be narrowly defined, necessary, proportionate, and subject to independent judicial review.
3. Large digital platforms that function as public infrastructure must be held to transparent, consistent, and appealable content standards.
4. Whistleblowers and journalists who expose wrongdoing in the public interest must be protected, not prosecuted.

We are not asking for the right to harass, threaten, or incite violence. Those acts are already rightly prohibited. We are asking for the protection of lawful speech — the exchange of ideas, the expression of conscience, and the freedom to dissent.

History teaches us that the first target of authoritarian power is always free expression. Once silenced, citizens lose every other freedom that follows.

We call on our elected representatives and responsible authorities to act now:

• Repeal or amend any law that criminalizes non-violent expression of opinion.
• Establish clear, enforceable transparency requirements for platform content moderation.
• Create independent oversight bodies with real power to review and reverse unjust speech restrictions.
• Strengthen legal protections for journalists, whistleblowers, and civil society voices.

Our voice is not a privilege. It is a right. Sign this petition and stand with every citizen who refuses to be silenced.
